Preston is a city in Lancashire, with a population of 122,719. It lies on the north bank of the River Ribble.

Preston was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was granted a Guild Merchant charter in 1179 and the city was a boomtown during the Industrial Revolution. Sites of interest in Preston include Sessions House, which is a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1900 and 1903. Harris Museum is a Grade I listed museum that opened in the nineteenth-century; the building also houses a public library. Other museums in Preston include Lancashire Infantry Museum and the Museum of Lancashire. Preston Guild Hall is an entertainment venue in the city that opened in 1973. St John's Minster is Preston's parish church and is Grade II* listed. St Walburge's Church has the tallest spire of any parish church in England.

Moor Park is the oldest and largest park in Preston, and has been designated Grade II* listed. Other parks include Miller Park. There are two shopping centres in the city: Fishergate Shopping Centre and St George's Shopping Centre.

Preston has several primary and secondary schools, while Preston's College and Cardinal Newman College offer further education courses. The University of Central Lancashire gained university status in 1992 and has an enrolment of 24,160 students.

There are facilities for sports including football, rugby and hockey. Preston North End F.C. play their home games at Deepdale, which has a capacity of 23,404.

Preston railway station offers services to destinations including London, Blackpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, York, Manchester and Barrow-in-Furness. There are bus services in operation in the city.
